KGGTF is pleased to present a new Knowledge Note, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province’s Energy Transition: A Sustainable Model for Green Growth.
Developed in collaboration with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, the publication examines Jeju’s fourteen-year energy transition since the launch of the 'Carbon Free Island 2030' initiative in 2012. It documents both the progress made in renewable energy deployment and the structural challenges that have emerged, including grid constraints and power curtailment, and explains Jeju’s strategic pivot toward a 2035 carbon-neutrality scenario centered on renewable energy, green hydrogen, distributed energy, and system flexibility.
Drawing on Jeju’s ongoing experience, the Knowledge Note offers interim and transferable lessons for developing countries and island regions facing similar conditions. It underscores the need to plan renewable energy deployment together with flexibility resources, strengthen public acceptance through benefit-sharing mechanisms, establish supportive institutions and market frameworks, and pursue green hydrogen through a phased and context-specific approach. The publication is available in both English and Korean.
