Grant Activities

Project Summary:

This grant aims to pre-identify investment opportunities and build knowledge capacity for LTO of nuclear power plants in Armenia, Brazil, Romania, and South Africa. By extending the operational life of existing nuclear facilities — which provide stable, zero-carbon electricity — the project supports both energy security and decarbonization goals in these countries.

It is expected to mobilize green growth investments in the nuclear sector, strengthen partnerships with Korean institutions and international bodies (IAEA), support client countries in making informed long-term energy policy decisions, and build institutional capacity on nuclear energy and LTO technologies among WBG client country officials.

The grant funds two main activities:

  • Pre-identification studies in two countries that will include desk reviews and in-country missions to assess the scope for World Bank Group (WBG) financing, evaluate existing LTO preparation, and ensure alignment with WBG environmental, social, and procurement standards.
  • Study tour to Korea for client country officials, featuring case studies on Korean LTO investments, technical training through KEPCO KINGS, and exposure to emerging technologies such as Small Modular Reactors.
