Grant Activities
Project Summary:
The grant aims to improve the reliability and efficiency of the Kyrgyz power system and facilitate the integration of variable renewable energy (VRE) by modernizing grid infrastructure with advanced technologies, including Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), SCADA, Automatic Generation Control (AGC), and Energy Management Systems (EMS).
The grant will inform the design of future lending operations under the KRED MPA program, support government strategies for grid modernization, strengthen client capacity for managing digital grid solutions, and deepen the energy partnership between the Kyrgyz Republic and Korean institutions.
It is structured around two activities:
- A detailed technical assessment of the existing grid, identification of technology gaps, and the preparation of a pre-feasibility report and actionable digitalization roadmap.
- Knowledge transfer and capacity building through structured exchanges, study tours to South Korea, and on-the-job training facilitated by Korean partners, primarily KEPCO and its affiliates (KEPCO Academy and KEPCO KDN).
This grant is aligned as follows:
- While the KRED MPA Phase I (P178286) is under implementation, preparation of KRED MPA Phase II is underway. Phase II focuses on scaling up solar power generation through private sector participation. Subsequently, KRED MPA Phase III will aim to further increase and diversify electricity generation through variable renewable energy development and private sector participation.
