Knowledge Exchange | Greening the Maritime Transport Sector in Indonesia

The World Bank Jakarta Office, funded by the KGGTF, conducted a study to assist Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation in developing a roadmap to decarbonize the maritime transport sector. As part of the initiative, key Indonesian stakeholders, including PT Pelabuhan Indonesia and PT ASDP Ferry Indonesia, participated in a study tour to South Korea from December 11–13, visiting Busan, Ulsan, and Seoul to learn from leading institutions such as the Korea Maritime Institute, Busan & Ulsan Port Authority, Korea Shipping Association, Korea Port and Harbor Association and Hyundai Heavy Industry.

The Knowledge exchange program highlighted South Korea's comprehensive approach to reducing carbon emissions in the maritime transport sector. This included Korea's decarbonization roadmap—a strategic plan outlining specific goals and methods to transition towards low-carbon shipping and port operations. The participants explored sustainable port management practices, such as the use of renewable energy in port infrastructure, efficient cargo handling systems to minimize energy waste, and advanced monitoring systems for tracking emissions. Additionally, Knowledge exchange program emphasized international collaboration opportunities, showcasing how partnerships between countries can accelerate decarbonization through shared technologies, joint research, and policy alignment.

Indonesian stakeholders gained valuable insights into green maritime practices, including the adoption of alternative fuels such as hydrogen and LNG, the creation of eco-friendly vessels, and advancements in energy-efficient port infrastructure. These experiences lay a strong foundation for Indonesia to design and implement similar strategies, fostering a greener maritime industry and contributing to global sustainability efforts.
