Grant Activities
Project Summary:
This grant aims to boost solar power generation and provide more reliable electricity access in Guinea-Bissau, addressing critical energy challenges across the country.
Currently, only 29% of Guinea Bissau’s population has access to electricity, with about and 60% concentrated in the capital, Bissau. This country’s energy infrastructure is underdeveloped, lacking a transmission system and operating with a minimal distribution grid restricted to the capital. Power generation is insufficient to meet demand, relying primarily on a 30MW rented heavy fuel oil engine barge and limited hydropower imports from the Gambia River Basin Development Organization (OMVG) interconnection system.
This program will establish accessible and sustainable electricity throughout Guinea Bissau and is closely aligned to the World Bank-approved Solar Energy Scale-Up and Access Project (SESAP) (P174576).
