Grant Activities
Project Summary:
The grant aims to build on the outcome of Phase I and assess the city-level impacts of rooftop solar PV programs, including technical challenges and the potential use of battery storage and advanced ICT solutions.
Vietnam has experienced strong economic growth, driven in part by the rapid development of its energy sector. However, electricity demand has surged, causing greenhouse gas emissions to more than double over the past decade. As a country highly vulnerable to climate change, Vietnam urgently needs to transition toward low-carbon energy sources. Rooftop solar PV presents a major opportunity but also faces critical challenges. These include unclear regulatory frameworks, limited technical capacity, and issues with grid integration. Aligned with its Phase I: support for the development of a national Solar PV Strategy, Phase II will concentrate on helping Vietnam implement the strategy. This involves addressing technical barriers, developing sustainable business models for the two distribution companies Ho Chi Minh Power Corporation (HCMPC) and Central Power Corporation (CPC), and identifying financing options for scale-up.
